From idea to working prototype: what to expect in your first six months

A practical look at the first phase of building a medical device inside an incubator, and how to use the time well.

Most MedTech journeys begin with a clinical problem and a rough concept. The first six months are about turning that concept into something you can hold, test and show to clinicians.

Start by writing down the clinical need in one sentence, then list the must-have functions of your device. Keep the first prototype simple: it should prove the core principle, not look like a finished product.

Use shared facilities such as mechatronics, electronics and 3D printing labs to iterate quickly. Short build–test–learn cycles of one or two weeks keep the team moving and make problems visible early.

By the end of this phase you should have a working prototype, early user feedback and a clear list of what needs to change before formal testing.
